Goal: Encourage native woody plant regeneration
The rate and direction of vegetation succession will depend on the climate, viability and composition of seed in the soil, and presence and type of weed species. Where there is an adequate source of shrub or forest plant species present in the tussock grassland, vegetation succession is likely to be towards a more woody vegetation community. The rate of regeneration is likely to be faster at moister sites than dry ones. For more information on this see related background information. Woody plant regeneration may be particularly desirable where tall tussock grasslands are in poor condition, or mixed short-tall tussock grasslands are present, as such regeneration is likely to result in a more stable plant community. NOTE: This goal is generally not compatible with managing an area for pastoral use. Stock access will become increasingly difficult, with less fodder available for stock grazing when woody plants such as manuka, matagouri, Dracophyllumspp, Hebe spp., mingimingi, or beech trees become dominant.

These lower altitude sites may be weedy, especially where significant disturbance has occurred. Weeds which compete with native shrub species are a particular threat.
