To maintain or enhance the value of tall tussock communities within areas primarily managed for conservation purposes

MANAGEMENT GUIDELINE:
  • No grazing

  • Establish a buffer zone to protect grassland from the management impacts of neighbouring grasslands (e.g. seed drift, grazing, fire risk etc.).

  • In open grasslands, ecological restoration of tussocks may be considered, where feasible

  • Fertiliser application, (N,P,S & K), improves tussock nutrient quality for Takahe browsing in Murchison Mountains.

  • No burning.

  • Weed control

    • Occuring at wetter high altitude sites - not likely to be weed problems except where significant disturbance has occurred, (e.g. avalanche) where weeds such as Hieracium lepidulum and H.arantiacium may be present. for more information on weed control.

    • Animal pest control (deer and chamois) is required to maintain good grassland.

    • Monitor to determine success of the management option, and status of weed and animal pest populations. for more information on monitoring in tussock grasslands.
