Maintaining Blue wheat grass and Rytidosperma grassland ( Elymus and Rytidosperma spp.)

Note: Little information is available for thiese localised , predominantly dryland communities.

GUIDELINE:
  • Blue Wheat grass tussocks are palatable to stock and can be grazed-out where grazing pressure is high, and the plants appear to benefit from cessation of grazing. Rytidosperma is more tolerant of moderate grazing.

  • Pest control

    Particularly rabbits

  • Weed control - Will depend on weeds present. Weeds which can potentially overtop the tussocks are considered to be a particular problem.
Thyme in Central Otago - Periodic light burning may be required to check Thyme, and allow regeneration of these grasses. Hieracium - is likely to be more of a problem in dryland, than in semi arid grasslands.

  • Monitor to determine success of the management option, and status of weed and animal pest populations. for more information on monitoring in tussock grasslands.
