Goal: Encourage the Succession of Blue Wheat grass and Rytidosperma to native woody plants.

Where intensive active management to maintain Blue Wheat grass and Rytidosperma grasslands "as is" is not feasible, conversion to native woody plants is considered a desirable option, but this will probably only occur in moister parts of blocks.

This goal will be easiest to achieve in wet areas (more than 700mm rainfall). In semi-arid areas, moist microsites, such as gullies and shady slopes also provide opportunities for this goal

MANAGEMENT GUIDELINE:

Initially no grazing, but once shrubland has become established, periodic light grazing may help to control competitive exotic grasses.
No burning
Establish a buffer zone to protect the area from the management impacts of neighbouring grasslands (e.g. seed drift from OSTD; fire risk etc).
Restoration with seeds of native woody species plants where the natural seedbank in the soil appears to be deficient in desired species. Collect the seed locally- within the Ecological District if possible. Species are likely to include Carmichaelia sp., Pimelia sp., Leucopogon suaveolens, Corallospartium sp., and matagouri (Discaria toumatou)
Weed control
Weeds which can potentially overtop native vegetation (e.g. wilding pines, gorse) are the highest priority for control.

Pest control
Animal control will be essential in most areas.
Monitor to determine success of this (passive) management option, and status of weed and animal pest populations. for more information on monitoring in tussock grasslands.

This goal is generally not compatible with managing an area for pastoral use.
