What influences the impact of grazing on tussock grasslands?

Grazing Impacts

The level of impact resulting from grazing will depend on the stocking, environmental attributes, and plants present in the grassland. These are highlighted in the table below:

Stocking attributes:
  • type of animal
  • stocking rate
  • frequency of grazing
  • length of grazing
  • time since last grazed
Environmental attributes:
  • whether the site experiences climatic stress
  • other disturbance factors

Plants present in grassland:
  • the type and extent of weed species present
  • palatability of plants present
  • growth form of plants
  • inherent vigour of plants
