Hieracium Management Information Module (Version 2)

A community-designed support system to help land
managers reduce or minimise the spread of Hieracium spp.
in the South Island high country of New Zealand

The structure and material contained within this information module has been developed through a collaborative effort between the high country farming community and scientists.

This project recognises:

  1. that although collectively (through the efforts of scientists, farmers and other land managers) we have a vast amount of information about Hieracium, this information is not routinely collected in one place. Rather, this information is held in the heads of a number of individuals and also stored in different offices, bookshelves and filing cabinets.

  2. that even where efforts have been made to bring up-to-date information together through reports and pamphlets, the changing nature of new research knowledge, technological developments, legislation and the management environment means that published material is quickly outdated.

The approach being taken is based on an acknowledgement of the importance of combining the practical experience of farmers and other land managers with the research knowledge gained by scientists. The Internet provides a convenient storage place where people know that information is being held. The related Internet abilities of e-mail and bulletin boards can also be used to keep people informed of new research results, changes to the system, etc.

When you are visiting please remember that feedback is the key to developing this eveolving information system. The information manager of this Hieracium module is Dr. Peter Espie from AgResearch at Invermay. Your feedback on pages within this module ("comments" bar at bottom of pages) will automatically go to him. You may also contact the leader of the Tussock Grasslands research programme, Dr Ockie Bosch at Landcare Research, Alexandra (Fax: 03-4489939), if you want more information on the research approach and how stakeholders can play an active role in the further development of the Management Information System.
