The rate and direction of vegetation succession will depend on the climate, viability and composition of seed in the soil, the condition, composition and density of tussocks present, and the presence and type of weed species.

Ecologists consider that the following guideline is likely to result in a tall tussock grassland with or without shrubland (depending on whether seed or adult plants capable of regeneration are present).

MANAGEMENT GUIDELINE:

Nil grazing (to allow snow tussocks to regenerate)
No burning, except for scrub control
Establish a buffer zone to protect grassland from the management impacts of neighbouring grasslands (e.g. seed and fertiliser drift, fire risk).
In open grasslands, replanting of tussocks may be considered, where feasible
Animal control
Weed control
These lower altitude sites may be weedy, especially where significant disturbance has occurred. Weeds which can potentially overtop the tussocks are a particular threat (e.g. p.contorta).
