Managing Bristle tussock (Rytidosperma setifolium) within a pastoral system

The slow plant growth response that occurs in the penalpine zone and higher altitudes make pastoral development uneconomic in dry environments.
MANAGEMENT GUIDELINE:
- Grazing: Stock type and stocking rate will depend on the farming system. Over-grazing will remove tussocks. Spell to allow tussocks to grow and seed. Destock in drought years.
- Aerial oversowing, and top dressing (OSTD)as required to maintain pasture productivity.
- Subdivision of paddocks can ease management, but some farmers prefer not to as they want to maintain the landscape values associated with their larger blocks.
- Weed control
Woody weeds may require careful burning. Burn scrub in Winter/Spring to minimise damage to tussocks. for more information on weed control
- Rabbit control is important.
- Monitor to determine success of the management option, and status of weed and animal pest populations.
for more information on monitoring in tussock grasslands.
