Maintaining a Saline Soil Habitat

GUIDELINE:
  • Lightly graze with sheep, unless site has seasonally wet soils. (No cattle, deer or goats)

  • No cultivation, irrigation, drilling or over-sowing and top dressing

  • Establish a buffer zone to protect the site from the management impacts of neighbouring grasslands i.e. AOSTD drift and irrigation)

  • Weed control
Extensive grazing is likely to control the growth of any exotic plants able to grow in saline soils. for general information on weed control

  • Animal pest control
Some level of rabbit grazing may be beneficial in keeping down competitive palatable exotic plants.

  • Monitor vegetation condition to determine success of the management option, and status of weed and animal pest populations. Adjust as necessary.

  • Monitor to determine success of the management option, and status of weed and animal pest populations. for more information on monitoring in tussock grasslands.
